JAMAICA PLAIN, MA — The Jamaica Plain Branch Library, in partnership with the Friends of the Jamaica Plain Branch of the Boston Public Library, is pleased to present At the Water’s Edge, the next exhibition of its 2026 rotating art series, featuring photography by Jamaica Plain artist Rachel King.
At the Water’s Edge traces the seasonal shifts along the shore of Jamaica Pond. Working in the field of addiction and recovery, King began turning to photography in the wake of the overdose epidemic, intensified by COVID-19, as a way to connect more deeply with her local landscape and community. What began as documenting the familiar evolved into a daily photographic journal, an exercise in slowing down and paying attention to small changes that can easily go unnoticed.
King was drawn to the water’s edge, where waves, melting ice, changing light, and reflections continually alter the landscape, transforming recognizable forms into unexpected patterns and abstract shapes.
The daily practice also became a way of marking time. Each image captures conditions that may never recur in quite the same way; together, they form a record not only of a changing landscape, but of the act of looking itself.
Through At the Water’s Edge, King invites viewers to look closely at a place that may already feel familiar, and to consider how sustained attention can reveal new ways of seeing even a landscape we know well.
At the Water’s Edge is on view from November 12, 2026–January 6, 2027, with a public reception to be held on Thursday, November 12, 2026, 5:30-7:30 PM. The library is open Monday-Wednesday 10-6, Thursday 12-8, and Friday and Saturday 9-5 (closed Sundays). The exhibition space is located on the lower level.
