September Events at the JP Branch Library
- ESL Conversation Group — Tuesdays 10 a.m. to noon, and Thursdays at 6 p.m.
- Kids Club — Wednesdays, at 4 p.m. Stories and crafts for children ages 7 and older. Groups cannot be accommodated. Please pre-register.
- Preschool Storyhour –Tuesdays, Sept. 25 through Oct. 30 at 10:30 a.m. Stories, fingerplays and crafts for children ages 2-5.
- Baby Lapsit — Wednesdays, Sept. 26 through Oct. 31 at 10:30 a.m. Songs, rhymes and stories for children ages 6-18 months. Pre-registration is required.
- Milk, Cookies and Bedtime Stories — Thursdays, at 6:30 p.m. for children ages 2-5. Oct. 4, Owls at Night; Nov. 1, Bear’s Bedtime.
- Spanish Study Group — Mondays at 4:30 p.m. Practice your Spanish conversational skills in a friendly environment. Participants should be able to read a Spanish language newspaper.
- Outta the Basement — On display indefinitely during library hours. Posters of the Jamaica Plain Branch’s past.
- Spanglish Poetry Slam — Thursday, Sept. 20, from 6:30- 8 p.m. Read an original poem or one by a favorite Latin author. Part of the branch’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.
- Tio Samba — Thursday, Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m. Tio Samba plays Brazilian Choro and Samba music as part of the branch’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.
- Author Talk: Johnny Diaz — Thursday, Oct. 4 at 6:30 p.m. Boston journalist and author Johnny Diaz reads from his book, Boston Boys Club as part of the branch’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.
- Peep, and the Big, Wide World’s Science Club — Thursdays, Oct. 11-25 at 4 p.m. Children ages 3-5 and their caregivers are invited to join a hands-on science program inspired by WGBH’s popular television show, Peep and the Big, Wide World. Participants will receive free books and take home activities, as well as preview short Peep and the Big, Wide World segments. Pre-registration is required.
- The Republic of Baseball — Thursday, Oct. 11 at 6:30 p.m. The story of the first Dominican baseball superstars. Part of the branch’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.
- Adult Book Discussion — Thursdays at 7 p.m. Oct. 11, The Measure of a Man: A Spiritual Autobiography by Sidney Poitier; Nov. 8, We Need to Talk about Kevin by Lionel Shriver.
- SABADO GIGANTE “SUPER SATURDAY” — Saturday, Oct. 13, from 6 to 10 p.m. This Hispanic Heritage Month finale features the group Ten Tumba for a night of salsa music and dancing. Refreshments at 6 p.m. with live music beginning at 7 p.m. Please use the branch’s rear entrance.
- JP Bookworms — Tuesdays at 4 p.m. A Book Discussion for girls in the 4th to 6th grades. Oct. 23, Theodosia and the Serpents of Chaos by R.L. LaFevers; Nov. 20, Sahara Special by Esme Raji Codell.\
- Reading Readiness — Tuesdays, Nov. 6 through Dec. 11, at 10:30 a.m. Children ages 2-5 will explore pre-reading concepts through stories, music and crafts. Ellen Hoffman performs on Nov. 13 and Dec. 4. Pre-registration is required.
- Toddler Storytime — Wednesdays, Nov. 7 through Dec. 12 at 10:30 a.m. Stories, fingerplays and crafts for children ages 18-36 months. Pre-registration is required.
