Dear JP Branch Library Patrons:
The City of Boston’s budget for next year is being finalized by the Mayor and the City Councilors. Right now WE NEED YOUR HELP to obtain funding to renovate and expand our branch library. Our City Councilor John Tobin is an avid supporter and is encouraging his colleagues on the Council to support the project.
WE NEED YOU TO ASK OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS TO FUND THE MASTER PLAN TO RENOVATE AND EXPAND OUR LIBRARY BUILDING. PLEASE WRITE OR EMAIL THE FOUR AT-LARGE CITY COUNCILORS AND THE MAYOR IN THE NEXT TWO WEEKS.
Here are some points that you may wish to include in your letter:
- The JP Branch Library building is not accessible for all patrons - there are no handicapped accessible bathrooms, and only one of the three floors is accessible to patrons with disabilities.
- The JP Branch Library is one of the most heavily used branches in the entire city, consistently ranking as the 4th busiest of the BPL’s 27 branches. The branches with greater circulation than the JP Branch have larger buildings, more library staff and longer hours each week.
- The building is 96 years old and lacks adequate space for library materials and programming for children, teens and adults.
- The interior of the building was last remodeled 44 years ago.
- The city of Boston, the BPL and the JP community have worked together to complete a master plan which would solve the accessibility and space needs issues.
