JP Branch Renovation and Expansion Update (March 2007)

Dear Friends:

Here is the latest update on our goal of achieving a major renovation and expansion of the library building.

The JP Branch Library Task Force appointed by Mayor Menino has agreed on a master plan proposal for renovating and expanding the branch. A final report outlining the plan is available for review and comments by the public at the library and on the Boston Public Library’s website.

In summary, the master plan entails a small addition toward South Street (that would not impinge upon the current circular drive), as well as the reconfiguration and full renovation of the current library building. The small addition will give the branch an inviting entrance near Curtis Hall and add much needed library space. Also, a small pop out would be built between the current building and Curtis Hall to house an elevator, stairs, new accessible bathrooms and librarian workspace. The next step is to secure funding for the project.

The current branch library building is 95 years old, having first opened on July 24, 1911. The goal of the Friends is to complete the project in four and a half years in order for it to be the highlight of the building’s Centennial Celebration in July 2011. In order to achieve that goal we will need the continued strong support of the Friends and the JP community. With your help and support we can convince city officials and the BPL to fund the project and make our branch a wonderful community destination that JP residents will take great pride in for many years to come. In the meantime, there are plans for a mini-makeover at the branch, which will include replacement of the crumbling floor tile in the children’s room and other minor improvements.

The Friends are always interested in any ideas and comments that you may have for improving the library. You can email your ideas, comments or words of support to: JPLibraryFriends@rcn.com.
